If you’re looking for an unforgettable family travel experience that combines wild landscapes, natural hot springs, and ethical wildlife encounters, look no further than family travel to São Miguel Azores. We have fond memories of our trip a few years ago and found it to be the perfect mix of nature, adventure, and relaxation—with just the right amount of Portuguese charm thrown in.
São Miguel is the largest of the nine Azorean islands, and while it may not be the first destination that springs to mind for a family holiday, it ticks all the boxes for active, outdoorsy travellers of all ages. We travelled via mainland Portugal, making the most of a stopover in Porto before flying on to Ponta Delgada, the island’s capital. Once there, we discovered a Jurassic-looking paradise with winding roads, crater lakes, waterfalls, and hydrangea-lined trails waiting to be explored.
Whale Watching & Waterfront Wonders
One of the big highlights for all of us was whale and dolphin watching. We went out with Sea Colors from Ponta Delgada, a locally run company with a strong marine biology and conservation ethos. They use smaller RIB boats, which offer a more intimate (and thrilling!) experience out on the water. The Azores is a hotspot for whales, dolphins, and other marine life, and the sightings didn’t disappoint. We actually ended up booking two trips.
Don’t miss the incredible artwork along the harbour walls—painted tributes left by sailing crews before embarking on transatlantic crossings. We also happened to catch the Red Bull Cliff Diving event at the little islet of Vila Franca do Campo, just offshore from Ponta Delgada—absolutely spectacular and a real buzz for all ages.
Walks, Waterfalls & Miradouros
São Miguel is a walker’s paradise, with trails winding through lush forests, up to crater lakes, and past waterfalls. We enjoyed the popular trek to Salto do Prego, but also found a quiet, equally beautiful trail from Porto Formoso that ended at a hidden waterfall—there are little gems like this all over the island.
The landscapes at Lagoa de Fogo, Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Canário, and Boca do Inferno are simply breathtaking—think turquoise lakes nestled in volcanic calderas, misty ridgelines, and hedgerows bursting with hydrangeas.
There are dozens of miradouros (viewpoints) ideal for pulling over, stretching your legs, or enjoying a picnic with a view.
Swimming Spots & Thermal Springs
São Miguel’s natural rock pools and thermal springs are a treat, although some can be a bit lively with kids—especially if the Atlantic decides to roll in.
At Furnas, our Airbnb came with four mountain bikes, and we had fun exploring the valley by pedal power. We visited Terra Nostra, the most famous hot spring, but actually preferred Poça da Dona Beija, a series of six smaller pools in a more natural setting. It’s open late into the evening—perfect for a post-dinner soak under the stars.
Top tip: Take an old swimsuit! The mineral-rich springs will turn your cossie a lovely shade of orange by the end of the trip.
Final Thoughts
São Miguel is a fantastic option for families who love the outdoors and want an off-the-beaten-track adventure without the long-haul flight. With its wild beauty, ethical wildlife experiences, Airbnbs, and friendly vibe, the island offers something genuinely different. Just pack your walking shoes—and maybe a raincoat!
