Everyone knows Rottnest Island as a summer playground, but not many people know it as a winter wonderland.  It’s time to change that!

The cooler months open up a myriad of opportunities to experience a completely different side of Rottnest and witness extraordinary things.   A mother quokka carrying her little joey in her pouch.   Colonies of migratory wedge-tailed Shearwaters returning to the same breeding burrows, year after year.  The squelching mating call of the sandplain froglet in the swamps.  Majestic Southern Right and humpback whales, breaching in the swell as they travel south on their long journey to the Antarctic.

These are just some of the amazing sights and sounds that Rottnest dishes up during the cooler months.  So, while it may be chilly outside, there’s plenty to see and do that will fire up all of your senses.

Cycling and hiking are among the most popular activities on Rottnest and the milder temperatures are perfect for discovering the island’s treasures.  There’s an incredible network of trails to suit all ages and abilities and these wind through untouched natural bush, past mirror-like wetlands and lakes and along the striking coastline with its pristine bays and beaches.  Many of the trails also take in the key attractions and historical landmarks like the Wadjemup Lighthouse and the many Aboriginal heritage sites.

When the weather is mild, you can spend all day exploring and if you venture away from the popular spots, you’ll be rewarded with the rugged landscape at its majestic shiny best.  And if you’re feeling up to it, you can always hire a wetsuit and equipment and have some watery fun, snorkelling, paddle boarding or kayaking.

Winter means fewer crowds, so it’s a great time to play a round of golf, hit a tennis ball, go on a cruise or enjoy a free guided tour.  The crisp fresh air is also perfect for discovering the amazing variety of animals and birds on the island and the abundant marine life beneath the waves.   And with a range of accommodation and dining options on offer, you’ll always find a cosy spot to relax and recharge, ready to go for another day of discovery and fun.

We’ve talked about the cooler months as a perfect opportunity to discover the other side of Rottnest, but it’s also a perfect time to discover a side of Rottnest that only a select few ever get to experience.  It’s Rottnest from the air.   Now that may not sound very special or unusual – but when there’s absolutely nothing but fresh air between you and a pristine white beach 10 000m below – it’s pretty spectacular.

Skydiving at Rottnest is one of the most exhilarating adrenalin rushes ever, and this island paradise is arguably one of the most beautiful places to skydive in the world.  To find out more or to book your tandem Rottnest skydive, contact Skydive Geronimo at www.skydivegeronimo.com.au.

Don’t wait for summer to experience Perth’s playground.  Book your trip to ‘Rotto’ and discover why the cool season is the coolest time on the island!
