The latest Trends report from social giant Facebook reveals the top destinations that scored the most check-ins from 2013, with some surprising inclusions.

The global top ten is dominated by three Thai shopping malls (in line with Instagram data), themeparks (read: Disney) and sports/entertainment stadiums. These are the hottest check-ins for last year;

1. Disneyland, California, USA
2. Siam Paragon Shopping Mall, Bangkok, Thailand
3. Times Square, New York City, USA
4. Central Plaza Ladphrao, Bangkok, Thailand
5. Disney California Adventure, USA
6. CentralWorld, Bangkok, Thailand
7. The O2 Stadium, London, UK
8. Epcot at Walt Disney World, Florida, USA
9. Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, USA
10. AT&T Park, California, USA

Number one spot for 2013 is the themepark paradise of Disneyland in California, which opened in 1955 and receives around 16 million visitors annually. Disneyland has risen one spot since the last report to leapfrog Times Square as the most popular attraction in the USA.

Up in second spot is the huge Siam Paragon Shopping Mall in Bangkok, which has also captured the imaginations of Instagram users – it’s their most photographed location in the last year!

And global events dominate the most talked about list too, with the election of Pope Francis, the birth of the Royal Baby George and the death of Margaret Thatcher all featuring within the top 10.

Looking at the trends for individual countries is pretty interesting too with political events, sports and festivals all dominating.

It’s also heartening to see that as well as Miley Cyrus, the Harlem Shake and cat videos scoring high on the most-talked about topics, travel also scored pretty highly too. In fact on the top global life events chart, travel comes in as the second most popular, behind relationships (engagement, married etc).
