Practical Tips for Exploring Barcelona

A Little About Barcelona’s History
There are a lot of interesting history facts that surrounds the founding of Barcelona. There are two legends about how the city was founded, with one legend saying that Hercules found the city. The second legion says that the father of Hannibal.

The Romans actually had some control over the city around 15 BC, and to this day there are still some ancient Roman ruins around the city. Eventually the Visigoths conquered the city around the 5th century, but by the 8th century the Count of Barcelona ruled the city.

The Climate
Many people flock to Barcelona because of the ambient Mediterranean weather. The city enjoys a very mild winter although in the summertime it can get very warm. The winters are mild and humid and the summers are hot and dry. Even winter temperatures rarely fall below 15 degrees C and the summer temperatures can hit the dizzy heights of 35 degrees C.

Parks And Beaches
Since the climate is mild all-year round, many travellers and locals alike head to the Mediterranean beaches of Barcelona, which are some of the best in the world. The coastline stretches for 4.5km and attracts sun lovers and watersports enthusiasts.  There are several beaches located throughout the city, but the oldest beaches are Sant Sebastia and Barceloneta and Somorrostro.

As far as parks go, there are over sixty parks that you can visit. Montjuic is the largest park in the city and is located on the Montjuic Mountain.

Other Facts About Barcelona
Barcelona is one of the most visited cities in the world. To be precise it is the 16th most visited city in the world. And when it comes to cities visited in Europe, Barcelona ranks number four, just behind behind Paris, Rome and London. Barcelona gets several million visitors every year, and it is not hard to see why.

There are two main UNESCO World Heritage Sites located in Barcelona; the Palau de la Música Catalana and Hospital de Sant Pau are one property. The other is the collective works of Works of Antoni Gaudi, including the Sagrada Familia Basilica, Park Güell (pictured above) and the Colònia Güell.

Barcelona is considered a major fashion destination and is actually one of the three fashion capitals of the world.

FC Barcelona is the local team which plays at the Camp Nou, which has a capacity of 100,000, making it the largest stadium in the whole of Europe. Football enthusiasts are drawn here to either watch a match or join an organised stadium tour.
