Three Best Places for a UK Trip

Thinking of a break in the UK? Looking to explore Britain? Regardless of the kind of trip you are after, there’s something for everyone – even if the weather is less than reliable.

Whether you’re looking for relaxation, excitement or the chance to learn more about the UK’s colourful history, there’s a wealth of great breaks to discover. And, thanks to regular trains and flights, the perfect break is never too far away.

The Lake District

Famed for its rolling hills, sweeping pastures and craggy hilltops, the Lake District is a hiker’s paradise. With beautiful lakes pocking the countryside and so many gorgeous walks to enjoy, the life and character of this charming district is well worth a visit.

The largest natural lake in England, Lake Windermere, is one of the most popular places for those enjoying a tranquil holiday. The sweeping, calm waters of this impressive body of water can be experienced by a walk by its shores or on a lake cruise.

While you’re in Windermere, visit The World of Beatrix Potter museum for a charming, fascinating history about the author and her famous characters.

If you enjoyed Lake Windermere, hire a motorboat to cover Lake Ullswater, and go enjoy a steak at the nearby White Lion Hotel in Patterdale. You can also enjoy some real ale here too – perfect after all that boating!

There’s also some beautiful castles in the Lake District, many dating back to the 1100s. There are beautiful Norman and Medieval castles to explore, and the views are stunning.

Roman forts in varying states of ruin are also to be found here, and the sites of several motte and bailey castles. It’s a fascinating place for any history buff.

London

With all the life and hustle and bustle of England’s capital city, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the wealth of things to see and do here. Plan a trip to London, and you can be sure of never a dull moment.

There are plenty of famous landmarks to visit, including the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace. And of course, there’s the shopping heaven of Bond Street to visit.

Get more acquainted with the city’s grisly past in The London Dungeon, or visit the grim and gruesome dungeons of the Tower of London. You can also see the famed crown jewels here, and chat to the quintessentially British Beefeaters.

If you’ve got a head for heights, take a spin on the London Eye. This 443-foot-tall Ferris wheel is the most popular tourist attraction in the UK. For an incredible view of the city, jump on and get the full panorama at the second highest vantage point in the city.

Though London is notorious for being an expensive place to visit, if you shop around you can find great deals on attractions and hotels. Make sure you choose somewhere close to the centre so you can fully experience the city. The Virgin Holidays + HIP hotels site lets you sort through London’s coolest hotels based on what kind of holiday you’re hoping for – that’s the legwork done for you instead of going to a hotel comparison site and choosing whichever is cheapest!

Cotswolds

Situated in the south west of the country, the Cotswolds is a picturesque and lively area of the UK, and the perfect choice for a relaxing holiday jam-packed with places to visit and things to do.

For a little dive into history, visit Kenilworth Castle and its Elizabethan Garden. Immerse yourself in Norman and Tudor history with the fascinating exhibits, and walk amongst beautiful flowers and ferns in the garden.

For something a little different, there’s The Model Village in Bourton-on-the-Water; a tiny village built from real Cotswold stone, and constructed to 1/9th scale in 1937. Or go a little more eccentric with Keith Harding’s World of Mechanical Music – an incredible collection of self-playing musical instruments. All exhibits have been restored to their original vintage splendour, and sound fantastic.

If it’s pure relaxation you’re after, visit the Thermae Bath Spa in the renowned spa town of Bath. Fuelled by the naturally warm, mineral-enriched waters from within the earth, the open-air rooftop pool and expert spa treatments are sure to leave you relaxed and refreshed.

It’s hard to fit everything into one trip; but if you visit any of these great locations, there’s no danger of being bored!
