Are These the World’s Worst Airlines? Here’s Why Travelers Are Complaining

Here at PureTravel we’ve flown some bad airlines in our time. We’ve been asked to move to the back of the plane to help get the nose higher to gain height, been allocated a seat in the cockpit (no flying, just asked to fiddle with a few switches) and even crash-landed on a remote Ethiopian airstrip

Have you ever booked a flight only to regret it the moment you stepped on board? From unexpected fees to endless delays, some airlines have built a reputation for turning air travel into a test of patience.

Musician Dave Carroll experienced every traveler’s nightmare when his $3,500 Taylor guitar was damaged during a United Airlines flight. After months of unsuccessful compensation attempts, he turned to music, releasing the song “United Breaks Guitars.” The catchy tune went viral, amassing millions of views and spotlighting the airline’s customer service woes.

Not all carriers are created equal, and some consistently rank at the bottom when it comes to service, reliability, and even safety. Based on passenger reviews and industry rankings, here are seven airlines that have left travelers frustrated—and in some cases, genuinely concerned. But remember, some airlines improve, others get worse so keep your eye on the departure board.

1. Tunisair – The Most Delayed Airline in the World?

Tunisair, Tunisia’s national airline, earned the unfortunate title of the worst-performing airline in 2024, scoring a dismal 3.63 out of 10 in a global ranking.

Frequent delays, poor customer service, and lackluster in-flight amenities have left passengers unimpressed. Many travelers report waiting hours for flights with little communication from staff. If punctuality is a priority, this might not be the airline for you.

2. Buzz – Ryanair’s Even Cheaper Offshoot

Buzz, a Polish subsidiary of Ryanair, landed the second-worst spot with a 4.45 out of 10 rating. While it promises low fares, passengers often find themselves paying more than expected due to hidden fees.

Uncomfortable seating, flight cancellations, and subpar customer service have led to widespread complaints. Imagine squeezing into a budget seat, only to realize you need to pay extra for nearly everything—including a carry-on bag. That’s the Buzz experience.

At least Ryanair has a sense of humour – Known for its cost-cutting measures, they once floated the idea of “standing cabins,” where passengers could stand throughout the flight to accommodate more travelers. This proposal, among others like charging for onboard toilet use, showcased the airline’s unconventional approach to budget travel, and their ability to get publicity by poking fun at themselves.

3. Nouvelair – A Rocky Ride in Tunisia

Another Tunisian airline, Nouvelair, fared only slightly better, with a 4.48 out of 10 score. Travelers report issues with punctuality, cleanliness, and a general lack of amenities.

Don’t expect in-flight entertainment or decent food options. If you’re on a long-haul flight, bring snacks—and a lot of patience.

4. Viva Aerobus – The Fee Machine

Mexico’s Viva Aerobus has been called out for cramped seating and relentless extra charges.

Think you’ve snagged a cheap ticket? Think again. Passengers frequently discover surprise fees for basic necessities like carry-on luggage and seat selection. Combined with poor customer service, it’s no surprise that many travelers leave frustrated.

5. Saurya Airlines – A Troubling Safety Record

Nepal’s Saurya Airlines isn’t just dealing with service complaints—it’s facing serious safety concerns.

In July 2024, a Saurya Airlines plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Kathmandu, killing 18 people. Investigators found that the aircraft was overloaded and not properly secured, raising alarming questions about the airline’s adherence to safety regulations.

For travelers, this isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s a risk.

6. Spirit Airlines – The King of Hidden Fees

Spirit Airlines has built its business on ultra-low fares, but travelers often find themselves paying extra for everything.

The airline has been fined for deceptive advertising and mishandling customer complaints—especially those involving passengers with disabilities. Flyers routinely report rude service, uncomfortable seats, and a frustrating à la carte pricing model that makes budgeting a nightmare.

7. Air Koryo – The World’s Worst Airline?

North Korea’s Air Koryo has long held the dubious distinction of being the only airline with a one-star rating from Skytrax.

Aging planes, no in-flight entertainment, limited international routes, and questionable service make it a last-resort option for those traveling to and from North Korea.

World’s Worst Airlines?

Choosing the right airline isn’t just about price—it’s about reliability, comfort, and, most importantly, safety. While some budget carriers can offer great deals, knowing what you’re signing up for is key.

Before booking, check recent reviews, research the airline’s reputation, and always read the fine print. Sometimes, that “cheap” ticket might end up costing you more than you expected—in both money and stress.
