A Guide to The Netherlands: Going Beyond Amsterdam

  • August 15, 2022
  • Robert

The Netherlands, one of the liveliest and most fascinating nations in Europeโ€”often also referred to as Hollandโ€”is best known for its colourful capital city. As youโ€™ll discover in our Travel guide to Amsterdam, the city is much more than simply canals and museums. If you travel farther afield n the Netherlands, you’ll find charming small towns and cities such as Rotterdam and The Hague. The Netherlands is a relatively tiny country, making it simple to travel there quickly and see a lot of it in a short period of time. Only a short cruise away from Southampton, this is the most comfortable and stylish way to get to The Netherlands.

History

The Netherlands is full of history and culture waiting to be explored. The Hague is a must see on your visit – With more than 150 international organisations calling The Hague home, the city has a distinctive, cosmopolitan feel and is regarded as the capital of justice across the globe. It features broad boulevards, a lovely shoreline, and some of the best Dutch architecture, and if this wasnโ€™t enough it also has a beautiful beach that you can relax and stroll along on an evening after exploring the city.

Nature

There is much more to The Netherlands than built up cities and tourist attractions โ€“ in fact, the wildlife is second to none and there are many different species that you can expect to see when visit, take a trip to Hoge Veluwe National Park or  Kasteel de Haar  for the best chance at spotting some amazing animals. From seals, to badgers and Parakeets โ€“ there are endless unique animals that you might be able to spot. You may also be able to spot some foxesโ€“ it is thought that they can hear a watch ticking from over 40 yards away, so if youโ€™re wanting to spot one you will need to be as quiet as possible!

Food

If you are a foodie, then The Netherlands will quickly become your favourite place. Famous for the iconic stroopwafel that are popular at coffee shops around the globe, this isnโ€™t the only unique Dutch food that is worth trying.  If you have been out for a few drinks and forgotten to have dinner, why not try a bitterballen. The ideal Dutch pub snack, these delicious, deep-fried, crispy balls are typically served with mustard for dipping and can be found on the menu at most bars and restaurants across the country, and are a firm favourite with locals and tourists. Another popular food is Ontbijtkoek, It comes in loaves and is so dense that one slice is enough to tie you over to the next meal! An iconic ginger cake snack is perfect to enjoy at any time of the day.
