Illuminated stalls, draped in layers of textured cloths, woven into an array of eye-catching colours. Echoes of vendors calling after the flock of an international mix of tourists passing through the narrow, cobbled alleyways. The concotion of aromas hitting me suddenly, emanating from flavoured teas, scented candles and wondrous spices- The vibrant Grand Bazaar, capturing every one of my senses.
Though I had spent many of younger years in Turkey, this city in particular, I could never grow old of it. Each venture through the market filled, winding lanes usually took me somewhere new and unexpected.
This town was rapidly becoming a city, with crowds at every turn. I was yet to experience the tranquility I so desired here. I found this place endearing, yet with no sounds of silence I became restless.
A searingly hot August afternoon, I began to saunter along the harbour, on the edge of the city's madness. Today, two enormous cruise ships were docked. Thrusts of people began emerging, scurrying towards the bargainous shopping and the 'genuine fake' brands that awaited them.
Before me was an area unfamiliar to my vast existing knowledge of this city, yet I continued on, and found myself on a long pier, stretching towards a lone island. On I went, with the anticipation of the unknown building within me.
Upon my arrival to the piers end, I was teeming with excitement at the beauty that stood before me. There was no mistaking that this was the peace and calm I had been searching for- the place I had hoped to find, to add to my passion for this awe- inspiring city. Here it was, in all of its wonder. A panoramic view, looking back onto the mountains that had originally enthralled me, and captured my heart into returning here year by year. It quickly became my haven, a vision for miles across the crystal Aegean waters, which truly took my breath away.
I perched alongside an old, grey stoned structure. I soon realised, to my amazement, that it was the remains of a fortress. How many wonders could one find here?
The sun was now blissfully beating down, and I could hear nothing but the sounds of waves crashing against the rocks beneath. I felt as though I had stumbled upon a secret, hidden jewel; free from worry, doubt, and an extreme contrast to the connecting city of Kusadasi.
This place, I shall never forget. The day I discovered peace within lifes craziness- my breathtaking travel moment.
