A Quick Guide to Exploring Barcelona

  • March 4, 2014
  • Jules

Barcelona is a breath-taking city, famed for its unique striking colourful architecture, vibrant culture, bustling outdoor markets and shops, and the best of regional cuisine. Set in a relaxed Mediterranean climate, Barcelona lends itself equally to the joys of café culture and alfresco dining, or lazing about on its many sunny sandy beaches.

City Sights, Eats and Drinks

Wherever you are staying in Barcelona, you will not be far from exciting activities, spectacular sights or cultural attractions. Barcelona hotels are stylish and reasonably priced and as such you can have a grandiose stay in this world-class tourist destination without spending too much. After you’ve checked into your accommodation, start your exploration by heading into the city.

Tibidabo and Las Ramblas

Catch the funky Tramvia Blau (blue tram), then onto the mountain train and ride up to Tibidabo Hill for a grand view overlooking the city. Make your way back down to the city, and take a walk along Las Ramblas. This wide tree lined boulevard is full of street entertainers, incredible human statues, portrait artists, food markets, eclectic shops, cafes and restaurants, interesting museums and the odd monument or two.

Tapas and Wine

As evening nears, see if you can get yourself on a Tapas Tour. Knowledgeable locals will show you the best tapas bars, and maybe even line you up with a Flamenco show. After this, check out the wine bars, sample the local brews, or head out to a beach bar for sangria or cocktails.

World Heritage Sites

The city boasts nine world-heritage sites that are must-sees on your discovery of this jewel of the Catalonia region. Many of these buildings are the works of the famed architect Gaudi, and they are astounding. La Sagrada Familia is one of the most famous cathedrals in the world. A modern twist on Gothic and Art Nouveau styles its unique ornate facades and sky-reaching spires rise as a surreal work of art on the cityscape.

Other Attractions

Meander through the medieval part of town at El Gotico, and discover ancient ruins, fortress walls and gothic era churches, mansions and market squares. Browse through art works at the Picasso Museum, and at the Joan Miro Foundation. Don’t’ forget Camp Nou and the football museum, or try the Harbour Cable Car for spectacular evening lights.

While this barely touches on the many attractions of Barcelona, it should whet your appetite for much more.
