Top Tips for a Successful Study Abroad Experience

  • September 8, 2024

Going to university in another country is a life-changing experience. Butt the study abroad experience can be overwhelming for first-time students, or even if youโ€™ve done it before!

There are so many things to consider, plan, and prepare for. However, with a little time and effort, youโ€™ll be able to get your mind right and ready and prepare yourself for the experience. This will make everything go smoother and help you make the most of your time abroad. Here are a few simple tips you can follow to help you thrive as an international student.

Prepare Ahead of Time

Naturally, thereโ€™s a lot to prepare for logistically. Starting early and getting organized can help you make sure youโ€™ve got everything handled.

Research what you need for a student visa and find out about any other documentation required by the host country, such as health insurance for expats or a language proficiency test. Find out what documentation your university will require, apply for lodging, and book your travel. Having these checked off your to-do list will help alleviate stress and allow you to focus on other things โ€“ like getting excited!ย

Immerse Yourself in Local Culture

Once youโ€™re there, be present in the local area. Go out, see the sights, tour the area, and try new activities. Remember, you chose to study abroad for a reason.

Get to know the people and the culture in your host country. How are their lives different from yours? What challenges do they face? What activities, dishes, and practices do they enjoy? Interact with people you normally wouldnโ€™t have met, learn new ideas and perspectives, and expand your mind. Understanding your local community better will even give you a better context for what youโ€™re learning in the classroom.

Prioritize Academic Dedication

While travel is a wonderful and important experience, your main priority is to learn new skills and obtain a degree. Letโ€™s not forget that!

With so much to distract you, itโ€™s important to have a study plan in place that can keep you on track. Keep a note of important dates (like tests, exams, presentations, and when your assignments are you) and develop a study routine that will help you focus. Make sure to balance your exploration with your academic obligations โ€“ attend your classes, meet your deadlines, and ask for help with academic challenges.ย

Build a Global Network

Many international students report that finding and building new relationships was a major challenge in their study abroad experience. However, they also report that the friendships they did build made the experience far more fulfilling.

Keep in mind that socializing can be different across cultures, so building and nurturing friendships might look different overseas from what youโ€™re used to. While this might be tough to navigate, donโ€™t let it deter you. Be open and tolerant of new ways of living and make an effort to adapt. Consider volunteering in your spare time and joining clubs or student organizations on campus.ย

Travel Smart and Stay Organized

A cluttered space often leads to a cluttered mind. When packing for your time abroad, think carefully about what you really need to bring along. Less is indeed more! Itโ€™s alright to bring along a few comforts like a beloved blanket. However, since you wonโ€™t be there forever, opt for mostly essentials.

Having a carefully curated selection of belongings in your new space will help you to stay neat and organized, especially in your study area. An orderly space will help you to manage the whirlwind of academic, travel, and social obligations youโ€™re about to be met with.ย

Take Care of Your Wellbeing

During your study abroad program, your health and wellbeing ought to be a top priority. Being away from home can often lead to healthy habits falling by the wayside, but this will be detrimental to your academics and your overall physical and mental health.

Make sure to eat well, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. Develop a new routine and structure your day in a way that allows you to balance hard work, play, and self-care. Plan regular breaks, work out daily, and spend time with your new friends to help you manage the stress of your degree and being out of your comfort zone.

Keeping a journal of your experience is a great way to manage your mental health and will be wonderful to look back on in the years following your program.

Final Thoughts

Studying abroad is a wonderful opportunity to grow academically, culturally, and emotionally. While the idea can be daunting, following these tips will help you take charge of the experience and plan it in a way that allows you to thrive and come back better than ever. Pack your bags and embrace a once in a lifetime opportunity!
