There is so much to see and do in Italy that it can be easy to miss some hidden gems in a rush to pack everything into a short trip. To ensure you don’t overlook some of the best places while visiting the Italian Peninsula, we sat down with Carlos Alvarez, Founder of Sui Generis Entertainment & Travel, Inc., to discover some of his favorite places to stay and play in the land of pizza and pasta.
Alvarez set up the boutique luxury travel company Sui Generis Entertainment & Travel, Inc with his wife Ana after discovering his passion for travel as a child jetting around the globe with his family.
The company now serves a segment of experienced and cultured travelers seeking unique and individual experiences with bespoke luxury itineraries and comprehensive concierge services that promise to surprise and delight even the most journeyed clients.
Italy is one of the world’s most visited countries, and it is easy to see why. Home to a rich history and an international reputation in the arts and sciences that reaches back centuries, it also offers iconic cuisine and breathtaking scenery.
But for Alvarez, Sicily holds a special place in his heart.
“I adore southern Italy and Sicily,” says Alvarez. “And I always enjoy staying in Taormina, a hilltop town on the island’s coast, at the Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo. It has a great Italian charm and an amazing view of Mt. Etna and the sea that is hard to match.”
Inside the hotel, guests are seduced by the relaxed glamor of the Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo’s old-world charisma. The retreat of the rich and famous dates back to the beginning of the last century when Edward VII, King of England, first stayed in 1906.
The region of Puglia, part of the heel of Italy’s southern boot, is renowned for its white-washed hilltop architecture, the beauty of its rural locations, and mile after mile of stunning Mediterranean coastline.
Alvarez describes the Borgo Egnazzia Hotel, in Puglia, as “unique” and a “very special property.” Found in Savelletri di Fasano, on top of the rolling hills of the Itria Valley, the property employs traditional local architecture in a muted color palette and uses local materials easily accessible in a small Puglian town.
“Borgo Egnazia is amazing, whatever the season,” explained the Sui Generis Entertainment & Travel Inc. founder. “But summer is the best time to go and experience its incomparable setting. It’s no wonder Condè Nast and Travel + Leisure have consistently recognized the hotel for its excellence over the years.”
The Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is another glamorous location. For years, celebs have flocked to the 50km waterfront to bear witness to its cliff tops and craggy seashore. Replete with comely beaches and quaint fishing villages, guests can bask in golden sunshine and inhale a culture that has drawn artists, writers, musicians, and filmmakers for decades.
For Alvarez, even though there are “many, many wonderful properties” on the Amalfi Coast, Le Sirenuse stands out. “The hotel is simply magical. The interiors are stylish and elegant, the staff is charming, and the service and Michelin-starred food are beyond impressive,” he said.
As for Positano, the hometown of Le Sirenuse, Alvarez agrees with the author John Steinbeck who recorded his feelings about the place after staying there in 1953. “It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.”
Another locale with more than its fair share of high-quality luxury hotels is the island of Capri. Found in the Bay of Naples, it’s a must for travelers searching for cultural sophistication and heavenly beauty.
When selecting accommodation that will enhance your enjoyment of Capri, Alvarez cites J.K. Place Capri as a “wonderful option that has been surpassing guests’ expectations since it first opened, as the first luxury hotel on the island, in 1885,” he said.
Not only is this a magnificent seaside property with oceanfront vistas, exceptional service, and period-informed interiors that will transport guests to another time, J.K. Place Capri is ideal for nature lovers too. Guests with a sense of adventure can head out with the hotel’s expert guides to explore the island’s famed sites, including Villa Jovis, Monte Solaro, and the Sentiero dei Fortini.
With these tips from Alvarez, we can’t wait to start planning our next trip to Italy.
