10 Tips For A Successful Study Abroad Experience In Asia

  • November 14, 2022
  • Jules

Asia is a massive continent with a huge variety of cultures, languages, and lifestyles. Expert Maxim Gorin knows whether youโ€™re looking to study in China, Japan, South Korea, or another Asian country, there are some things you should keep in mind to make the most of your experience.

More and more students are choosing to study abroad in Asia each year. And it’s no wonder why! Asia is a continent full of rich culture, delicious food, and amazing sights. If you’re thinking about studying abroad in Asia,

Check out our 10 tips for a successful experience.

1. Make Friends

One of the best things about studying abroad is meeting new people from all over the world who share your love of adventure! So don’t be shy โ€“ introduce yourself to people wherever you go and who knows, maybe you’ll make some lifelong friends along the way.

2. Do Your Research

Before you commit to studying abroad in any country, it’s important to do your research. Read up on the culture, customs, and expectations. The more you know about a place before you go, the better prepared you’ll be to adjust to life there.

3. Learn The Language

Even if you’re only planning to study abroad for a semester, it’s still a good idea to learn some of the basics of the local language. Not only will this help you get by day-to-day, but it will also show your respect for the culture. Many Asians are multilingual, so don’t be afraid to ask someone for help if you’re feeling lost.

4. Be Open-Minded

One of the best things about studying abroad is that it allows you to experience new things. So go ahead and try that weird food, visit that strange temple, and strike up a conversation with that interesting person you meet on the bus. You never know what might happen!

5. Be Respectful

Remember that you are a guest in another country and should always behave accordingly. That means being respectful of other cultures and traditions, even if they’re different from your own. Avoiding offensive behavior will go a long way in making sure you have a positive study abroad experience.

6. Keep An Eye On Your Belongings

When you’re traveling around Asia, it’s important to keep an eye on your belongings at all times. Pickpockets are known to operate in crowded areas, so it’s best to keep your valuables close to your body at all times. It’s also a good idea to make copies of important documents like your passport in case of loss or theft.

7. Stay Healthy

Asian countries are home to some delicious food, but they can also be breeding grounds for illness if you’re not careful. Be sure to wash your hands often and avoid eating street food unless it’s been thoroughly cooked. If you do get sick, don’t hesitate to visit a local clinic or hospital for treatment.

8. Stay Safe

In addition to staying healthy, it’s also important to stay safe while you’re studying abroad in Asia. Be aware of your surroundings at all times and trust your gut if something feels off. Avoid walking alone at night, and be cautious when taking taxis or other forms of public transportation. If you ever find yourself in an unsafe situation, don’t hesitate to call for help or reach out to your program coordinator for assistance.

9. Have Fun!

This is perhaps the most important tip of all: make sure you have fun while you’re studying abroad! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so soak up as much as you can while you’re there. From exploring ancient temples to trying new foods, there’s no shortage of amazing experiences waiting for you in Asia.

10. Keep In Touch With Loved Ones

While it’s important to immerse yourself in the local culture while you’re studying abroad, don’t forget about your friends and family back home! Make sure to keep them updated on your adventures by sending regular emails or video chats (WeChat is very popular in China). They’ll love hearing about all the amazing things you’re doing!

Final Thoughts!

We hope our tips have inspired you to start planning your own study abroad experience in Asia! Just remember to do your research beforehand, stay healthy and safe while you’re there, and most importantly โ€“ have fun!
