Everything You Need to Know About Moving to Your Favorite Travel Destination

  • March 5, 2021

Moving abroad can be one of the most rewarding experiences a person could go through in their life. This is the perfect way to step out of their comfort zone and broaden their horizons in order to fulfill their dreams and take advantage of the many opportunities the new destination offers.

However, while moving to your new home abroad can be super exciting, the process of getting yourself there can be at times overwhelming. In order to have a smooth and hassle-free relocation, there are a few things you must do before you get on the plane.

Although you already may have an idea of the steps, you may forget something along the way which unfortunately may lead to undesired issues.

So, in order to be well organized and have everything ready ahead of time, we have come up with a checklist of the things you should know about moving to your favorite travel destination.

Gather all personal documents

No matter where you decide to relocate, the first crucial step in this process is to have all your documents ready. This includes making copies of all personal records including your birth certificate, passport, driverโ€™s license, medical records, any certifications and visa documents.

If you are moving to a country where the official language is different from yours, then you must have all paperwork translated into your host countryโ€™s language. So, for example, if you are moving to the United States or United Kingdom, you must look for certified translation services in order to get your documents translated into English.

By doing this step successfully, you are less likely to come across any issues that may occur in the process of moving abroad.

Research your destination

The second most important step in relocating to your new country is to research its culture and way of life. This can come especially in handy if you are planning to move to a place that has a completely different lifestyle than where you are coming from.

For example, some of the things you should research are the social norms and rules of etiquette in your host country. By being culturally aware, you are simply showing that you will be respectful of the local people and their values.

Another way you can maintain this respect is to learn your host countryโ€™s language if it is different than yours. Learning a few words and phrases can help you get around when you are settling in your new living destination.

Look for a job

No matter if you are a student who wants to study in some of the top universities in the world or you are simply looking for a new adventure, it is recommended that you get a job. Without having some form of income, you will soon find yourself with big financial problems which may even require you to move back to your home country.

So, one way of avoiding this is to look for a job before your arrival.

Firstly, you should research whether the visa you are getting allows you to have a job. It is best advised that you look for job sponsors who will guarantee your stay and will provide you with enough income so you will be able to support yourself in your new destination.

Sort out your financial situation

According to a 2018 research, another important consideration among expats when moving abroad is sorting out their financial situation.

Firstly, it is advised that you have a starting budget that will help you get around during the first few months before you receive your new income and completely settle in.

Then, make sure you inform your bank of your travel dates in order to maintain your credit score and make payments for any ongoing bills or loans. Thisย Annual Credit Report reviewย can help. This website offers a free service to request your credit reports.

Also, you should consider getting an international credit card to avoid paying overpriced foreign transaction fees. In addition, you can do thorough research on what paperwork you need to have in order to set up a savings or checking account in your new destination.

Find a place to live

If you are moving to your favorite travel destination because of a job opportunity, then you may be in luck and have your new company provide accommodation for you in the beginning. However, after a short period of time, you will have to find yourself a permanent place to live in.

For example, a very common way to do this is to temporarily rent an apartment or a house. Many people turn to online rental marketplaces such as Airbnb which usually have verified hosts you can look up and read reviews on from previous guests.

Once you find your accommodation, you should make a contract for the first month before signing up for several months. This is because you may find something better and even more affordable later on.

Plan your health care ahead of time

Before you relocate, you should perform all medical examinations and get any travel immunizations your host country may require.

Also, you could ask your current health care provider if they cover any medical checkups, accidents or medical conditions while you are abroad. If not, you must research the health care system in your host country in order to get medical insurance in case of emergencies.

For example, if you are moving to a European country, then you should consider applying for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This is usually recommended if you are planning on living in your new destination for a longer period of time and you must integrate with the local health insurance system.

Final thoughts

Moving to a new country is completely different than simply visiting it. Both are exciting adventures, but relocating requires more special attention and thorough research for a less stressful experience. While the entire process can be daunting at times, that shouldnโ€™t discourage you and stop you from embarking on this life-changing opportunity.

So, before you say your goodbyes to your home country and your loved ones, it is important that you have a moving abroad checklist to refer to.

In case you get lost along the way, you can always use this guide to be well prepared and plan moving overseas ahead of time.
