Dressed in Japanese traditional clothes (kimono), explore and experience what lies beneath Japanese culture and spirit, focusing primarily on Zen. Start your day by changing your clothes into kimono. Experience a tea ceremony, which originated from Zen Buddhism, and enjoy a soothing, tranquil time. Relish delicately prepared Japanese traditional vegetarian dishes for lunch. Walking through the quiet streets dotted with lovely local shrines and temples, and through a lively geisha district, head to Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple Kennin-ji, which stands solemnly in the midst of the vibrant quarter. Submerge yourself in the world of Zen, and have some time to reflect on your life in peace.

Meet at JR Kyoto Station at 9:00 or 9:30 at subway Gojo station and go to a kimono wholesale dealer to get dressed in the kimono of your choice out of around 200 beautiful, elegant kimonos for women and around 50 quiet-colored chic kimonos for men. Head to a venerable Japanese and green tea shop, which has been in business for more than 130 years, and participate in and learn about the tea ceremony, which is grounded in the spiritual discipline of Zen Buddhism. Enjoy the serene and peaceful time with aromatic green tea and beautiful seasonal wagashi (Japanese sweets). Savor a delicate and beautifully prepared popular Kyoto-style ‘namafu’ lunch. Go on to explore quiet back streets, stopping at small local shrines and temples while enjoying the flavors of everyday life in Kyoto. Also visit an old geisha district. Take a short ride on a train and get off at Shijo, the most vibrant area in Kyoto, then walk through the Gion geisha district to Kennin-ji Temple. This is the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto and was established in 1202 by the Buddhist priest Eisai, who first brought in Zen Buddhism to Japan and introduced the culture of green tea. Solemnly standing in the lively area, Kenjin-ji gives you the time to reflect on your life and soothe yourself in front of a simple but profound rock garden, a beautiful moss garden, and anywhere inside the temple filled with the Zen spirit. After a guided tour inside the temple, enjoy some free time doing whatever you prefer, before going back to the kimono wholesaler to unfasten your obi sash.
