Description of the area
The Retezat Mountains are part of the South Carpathians, the Retezat-Godeanu mountains group.
The Retezat is the most complex and magnificent mountain massif for all the areas of Romanian Carpathians. Its originality lies in the existence of two mountain areas: The Big Retezat with spectacular alpine ridges exceeding 2000 m and the Small Retezat mountains with a well developed karstic relief.
This mountain area has the highest number of mountain peaks over 2,000m in Romania (over 20), and the mountain range gurgles with streams and has more than 80 glacial lakes.
The highest peak in the Retezat Mountain is Peleaga Peak, with an altitude of 2509 m. It is a peak that can be reached quite easily from the Peleaga Lake, a lake that can be seen in all its splendor from the mounatin top.
Its wide variety of landscape and the existence of more than a third of the Romanian flora in this area are some of the reasons for which it was declared a National Park in 1935, being the oldest national park in Romania.
The Retezat Mountains are a paradise for adventure seekers, offering breathtaking sceneries with numerous peaks, big slopes, glacial bazins, moraines, valleys with narrow gorges sectors, blind karst valleys, caves.
