Itinerary
Day 01. Christchurch to Akaroa This morning you’ll be picked up from the hotel together with others in the group, taken to the South Pacific Motorcycle Tours Base, welcomed by the Guides and introduced to your chosen bike. “Gentlemen – start your engines!” The fun begins with a care-free ride via two extinct volcano crater rims to Akaroa, one of the world’s most beautiful places. Get to know others on the tour with a special South Pacific Welcome Dinner. Overnight Akaroa.
Day 02. Akaroa to Mount Cook Start the day with pleasant, easy riding to the Southern Alps via the tranquil Canterbury Plains. Try local jams and cheeses at a country town before climbing over the mountain pass to the glacial ice-blue lakes of Tekapo & Pukaki. Stop to see the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd. At Mount Cook National Park experience one of New Zealand’s most important spiritual, cultural and geographical places at the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre. Overnight Mnt Cook Village.
Day 03. Mount Cook to Dunedin With the Southern Alps still as your backdrop, awesome sweeps and bends on trafficfree roads take you through Mackenzie merino sheep country followed by superb riding along-side hydro-lakes and dams. Amazing biking lanes through ancient limestone landscapes lead you to the Pacific Ocean where you can explore 65 million year old Moeraki Boulders on the way to Dunedin City nestled at the foot of the Otago Peninsula. Day 04. Dunedin Rest or Ride We have allowed time for you to sample the delights and highlights of Dunedin – City of Grace and Grandeur, the Otago Peninsula with its sea-life and winding coastal lanes. Choices include the Royal Albatross Sanctuary, penguins, seals, Larnach Castle, Taieri Gorge Railway & Station, Speights Brewery, Cadbury’s chocolate factory, and the interesting Dunedin Victorian architecture. Day 05. Dunedin to Invercargill The recently tar-sealed Southern Scenic Route skirts white sand beaches of the deserted Catlins Coastline for mile upon mile. Try some fresh oysters at Bluff, NZ’s most southerly point. At Invercargill, check out the real Indian motorcycle that won the land-speed world record at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats in 1967, ridden by Invercargill eccentric Burt Munro, and talk to the staff that knew him. Burt’s character was immortalised by Anthony Hopkins in the movie “The World’s Fastest Indian”, filmed partly in Invercargill, Burt’s home town. Overnight Invercargill
Day 06. Invercargill to Milford Sound Effortless riding through Riverton and Manapouri takes you to Lake Te Anau, gateway to Fiordland National Park before riding of the world’s most scenic roads with its mirror lakes and majestic fiords. Watch playful Kea parrots as you wait to ride through the Homer Tunnel which takes you into a magical world. Overnight onboard the Milford Mariner on Milford Sound. Milford Mariner Overnight Cruise (included in tour price) An overnight cruise amidst spectacular Milford Sound, is a once in a lifetime experience. While on board the Milford Mariner you will cruise the full length of this spectacular fiord to the Tasman Sea before anchoring for the night in sheltered Harrison Cove. The vessel explores many points of interest, with plenty of time available to view waterfalls, rain forest, mountains and wildlife with the experienced nature guide on board. The Milford Mariner has a spacious dining saloon, observation lounge and large open deck areas for viewing the scenery of Milford Sound. With a nature guide at hand you can explore in the tender craft and kayaks or simply relax on deck.
Day 07. Te Anau to Queenstown This glorious five star ride snakes its way between Lake Wakatipu and the world’s most photographed ‘Remarkables’ mountain range. Time to look for the Kingston Flyer Steam-train before arriving into Queenstown, but not before stopping at the Shotover River for an awesome group jet-boating experience! Overnight Queenstown.
Day 08. Queenstown Rest or Ride So much to do! Bungy Jumping, steam-boat-cruise across the lake to a sheep station, cable-car ride to the top of a mountain for a Kiwi Buffet dinner and Maori Haka Cultural experience, white-water rafting, paragliding, bike ride to Paradise or Arrowtown – or simply wander around the town and soak up the buzzing atmosphere of the Adventure Capital of the world – enjoy! Day 09. Queenstown to Franz Josef Glacier Today you’ll be riding over the highest tar-sealed road in New Zealand to Wanaka, then through the lush Rainforests of the West Coast via Haast Pass where you’ll experience beautiful lakes, rivers, waterfalls and the Tasman Sea. When you think it can’t get any better, the gigantic snow-covered mountains with their glaciers begin to tower overhead. Overnight Franz Josef Glacier Village
Day 10. Franz Josef Glacier to Punakaiki Snake your way through Jurassic rainforest and alongside the dramatic rugged coastline of the Tasman Sea, still so close to the mountains. A stop at the West Coast township of Hokitika allows you to sample local arts and crafts, then continue along this magnificent coast-line to the Paparoa National Park and the amazing Punakaiki Rocks and blowholes. Overnight Punakaiki. Organised Optional Activity – Twin Glacier Helicopter Ride/Glacier Landing ($285 per person, duration 30 minutes) Fly over two of New Zealand’s most famous glaciers and land at the head of either the Franz Josef Glacier or Fox Glacier. View the incredible natural phenomenon of the glacier as it winds slowly down the carved valleys from its origin in the mountains high above you. DAY 11 Punakaiki to Hanmer
Day 11. Punakaiki to Hanmer Springs Starting with one of the best coastal rides in the world, meander your way via the traffic-free road to peaceful Hanmer Springs village via the mighty Buller River and the legendary Lewis Pass. Celebrate this most amazing ride with a hot soak in the open-air thermal springs, a massage, or at tonight’s special Farewell Dinner. Overnight Hanmer Springs.
Day 12. Hanmer Springs to Christchurch Spend the morning exploring Hanmer Springs Thermal Village, then it’s a perfect afternoon ride from the Southern Alps to the tranquil Canterbury Plains will gently bring you back down to earth before returning your bike to the Christchurch Base.
