Itinerary
Day 01. Bordeaux Pick up at the airport or train station by our driver-guide Panoramic tour of Bordeaux and transfer to Sarlat. On the way to Sarlat, stop in Saint Emilion. The village is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the centres of Bordeaux wine-making. Welcome dinner and overnight in Sarlat.
Day 02. Beynac and Cazenac/ Dordogne boat ride In the morning, a guided walking tour of historic Sarlat, rich merchant town of the 13-16thcentury. The town of Sarlat can be discovered through its gastronomy as it is the capital of an exceptional “terroir”. The market place an un-missable spot, is one of the most beautiful in all of the South West. Then drive to the beautiful village of Beynac-et-Cazenac and enjoy a boat ride on the Dordogne on board an authentic Gabarre river boat. Then on to the small village of Domme. This true medieval bastide is entered through a gateway flanked by stout limestone towers. Walking tour in the village, free time and return to Sarlat. Overnight in Sarlat.
Day 03. Cave Paintings En route to Les Eyzies, world capital of prehistory listed among the 400 sites of the World Heritage of Mankind by UNESCO. Le Musée national d’Archéologie des Eyzies, houses the most important paleolithic collection in France. Stop at Rouffignac, immense cavern comprising 8 kms of galleries Occupied by bears for a long time and one can still see traces of their presence. Paintings of wooly mammoths and other animals. Some 15,000 years BC unknown painters created the breathtaking cave paintings of Lascaux. Visit of Lascaux II a perfect reproduction of the main cave. Before returning to Sarlat, drive through the Vézère Valley, known as the «Valley of Men». Back to Sarlat for overnight.
Day 04. St Cirq Lapopie, Pech Merle & Cahors A delightful drive up the Lot valley to St Cirq Lapopie, classified as one of 'most beautiful villages of France' clings on to the cliff face overhanging the Lot River. The narrow cobbled streets are lined with very beautiful half-timbered stone and wood houses dating from the XIIIth to XVI centuries. In the afternoon plunge below ground at Pech Merle, underground caves known to man for over 25,000 years. Departure towards Cahors. Here you can admire the Pont Valentré, the only medieval military bridge left in Europe. Back to Sarlat for overnight.
Day 05. Bordeaux Breakfast at your hotel. Route towards Bordeaux and transfer to airport or train station.
