As it is too high for fruit trees or double cropping, the villagers survive on sparse crops of wheat, barley, potatoes, peas and turnips -as well as their herds of animals. Hushe is being spoiled by too many tourists; children beg and are a nuisance around the camp. Despite the money gained from portering, the inhabitants are the dirtiest we have seen in northern Pakistan. That, said, they are wonderfully hospitable and friendly. Flour, rice, sugar, biscuits and kerosene are usually available in the village shop. Horses and donkeys are not available, but there are usually plenty of porters, unless your presence coincides with the harvest in August or a big group trek. Over night in camp.
