This tour is for anyone with an interest and a fascination for mountains, the passes that traverse them, the scenery associated with mountain routes, the multiplicity of the vegetation and geology, the birds (these areas have large raptor populations), quaint and remote villages and their people, and not least the southern night sky. The engineering feats achieved by the builders will no doubt be recognized, but it will be left to the individual to decide what are the most outstanding features of this tour.

|Leaving C.T. we travel SE over Sir Lowry’s Pass, Viljoens Pass, and the magnificent Franschhoek Pass, descending into the famous town of Franschhoek. We continue through Paarl and Wellington, and the Bain’s Pass & Kloof, a National monument, before reaching the picturesque, historic Cape Dutch town of Tulbagh|
|Over Mitchell’s Pass we travel towards Laingsburg. the Rooinek Pass, into the Seweweekspoort (Sevenweeksgorge), a geological marvel, and along the R62 on to Calitzdorp. From Oudtshoorn, the town of the “feather barons”, we ascend the majestic, breath-taking and highest pass of the tour, the Swartberg Pass, and proceed to Prince Albert. then join the N12 through Meiringspoort into the quaint village of DeRust.|
|Uniondale, Avontuur, another gravel road lies ahead over the precipitous but spectacular Prince Alfred’s Pass. Along the N2 past Plettenberg Bay, then east to the indigenous Tsitsikamma forest, to overnight in comfortable chalets in the Tsitsikamma National Park at Stormsrivermouth,|
|Leaving Tsitsikamma through the Bloukrans and Groot River Passes, and the magnificent indigenous forests of Nature’s Valley to Knysna, we follow the old Cape road into George. Over the Outeniqua range, we first take the old, the Montegu Pass, up, then the new, scenic Outeniqua Pass, down. Next, Riversdale, the Garcia Pass, and via Barrydale and the Tradouws Pass we reach the historical town of Swellendam for the night.|
|Cogman’s Kloof to Montagu, “Die Koo”, and over the Rooihoogte Pass onto the N1, we travel down Hexriver Pass into the Hexriver and Breederiver valleys, thus returning to the Cape winelands.|
|Last but not least, the duToit’s Kloof and duToitskloof Pass, before we are back in Cape Town.|
