Itinerary
Day 01. Arrival by your own at the hotel in Greve in Chianti and meeting with our representative who will give you maps, roadbooks, vouchers and any information you need. Greve in Chianti, which is named after the river that runs through it, is the main town of the Chianti Classico wine zone, home to Chianti's largest wine fair, held every September. If you are there on Saturday don't miss the weekly market, a combination of farmers market and flea market. Dinner and overnight in Greve.
Day 02. Visit Greve's surroundings: the castello of Montefioralle, probably one of the most ancient villages in Chianti and still today enclosed within its original walls and the beautiful Badia a Passignano founded by Benedictine monks in the 11th century (15Km). Dinner and overnight in Greve.
Day 03. From the Florentine Chianti to the Senese one hiking fron Greve to Radda in Chianti (20 km). Visit Monte San Michele, the highest point in the whole of Chianti and Castello di Volpaia with its famous wine. This village, situated on a hill covered with woods and extensive vineyards, has the medieval structure still intact.
Day 04. Today the hike starts from Castellina in Chianti with its massive Rocca with a huge 14th century tower and the small Etruscan museum. The route is along castles and churches of the Chianti Classico passing through Gaiole in Chianti to reach Vagliagli whose name Vagliagli means Valley of Garlics (18 km). Dinner and overnight in Vagliagli.
Day 05. The path from Chianti to Val d'Elsa follows the route of the most famous road of medieval ages: the via Francigena. Visit Fonterutoli before reaching Monteriggioni (20 km), a small city with a 14 tower, 10 meter high wall, elliptical in shape, completely surrounding it. Dinner and overnight in Monteriggioni.
Day 06. From Monteriggioni to Siena continue following the via Francigena passing through dirty roads and crossing the “Montagnola Senese” to reach Siena, city inscribed on the World Heritage List (20 km). Dinner and overnight in Siena.
Day 07. We suggest you to visit Siena before leaving! We can book for you an extra night in Siena, if you wish. Departure on your own.
