Itinerary
Day 01. Early in the morning we start our trip in Salta city, in this day we will get Chile over an asphalt road. When we get Purmamarca in Jujuy province, we take the road know as Paso de Jama up to cross The Andes, after few hours we will cross Salinas Grandes, our famous salt flat in Jujuy, and then a little village of Susques where we can have a lunch. After that, we keep going to the west straight to the Chilean Border where we can find a Custom building of Argentina and we will stop to be pacient and fill forms in migration to cross the border in JAMA. If we are lucky, in 1 hour we will be ready to continue 150 kms. more to get San Pedro de Atacama where we will stop again in a Chilean custom building to do the same...and may be take more time because they will check all our luggage looking for only god know ... and fruits or vegetables because is forbidden to bring it. Anyway...the road to cross The Andes is beautiful, awesome...we will see salt flats, high lakes and huge volcanoes snow caped. When we get San Pedro de Atacama, we go straight to our hotel to rest and then you can go for your own to have a dinner in one of many restaurants on the main street named “Caracoles”.
Day 02. The day before was long!, so no early wake up, don’t worry..for your own you can easily walk to the village to visit the fantastic archaeological museum of San Pedro de Atacama and the beautiful old church made by adobe bricks and with wooden roof of cactus. On mid day you can have a lunch for your own and then, at 2 PM we will go with a vehicle to visit to interesting places: Cejar and Chaxa lakes on the Atacama salt flat. In the first one, we can see a deep lakes with clear water with salt crystals and where some people swimming in. Then we keep going to the next one crossing on the way a small village Socaire where an oasis by the river trough Jerez gorge is another strong contrast of green and desert. Once we get Chaxa Lake, we will enjoy the avifauna of this fragile environment where the flamingos are an spectacular fly show. We return to San Pedro de Atacama just before the sunset time, so we can go to see this moment to see the sun down looking for the volcanoes at Mars Valley and then...we back to the hotel.
Day 03. It´s time to wake up early if you want to see one of the highlights of this trip. The Geysers del Tatio. Yes, I’ll pick you up at 4:30 AM in the morning. Why?...because we must be at the sunrise time, at 100 kms. away from San Pedro and, you will se how busy is the road up to the geysers because hundred of regular excursion do the same every days along every year. After see this fantastic and spectacular natural show, we will return to San Pedro but, we will stop at Machuca village where is traditional to test “anticucho de llamo” its mean “smalls lama met brochettes”, delicious! Then, we continue... and if you want, there is a place near with thermal springs very nice!..if you bring towels and swimming suite, you can take one of the pools on the creek to have a hot bath. The ticket entrance is managed by the local community and charges u$ 20 per person. Estimate time to arrive to San Pedro 1:00 PM...you can take a rest until 5:00 PM when I’ll pick you up again to go at only 10 minutes from San Pedro, in Moon Valley, Valle de La Luna ...to see our last sunset on the desert.
Day 04. It´s time to return to Salta, Argentina...another long journey like the first, but in this case over Paso de SICO, and in this way we will see different landscapes in each way....its perfect! We can’t start before 8:00 AM because it’s the Migration’s office open time. In this case will be faster because we are leaving...nothing to check. After 2 hours, we will get two lakes to visit: Miscanti and Meñiques .. Awesome..located in a nice valley surrounded by volcanoes are one of my favourite places in this trip. We will see flamingos, ducks and taguas ina very peaceful place and protected in a natural reserve. The road continue to the border but the nice landscape never end..Salar de Aguas Calientes and Tuyaito Lake are another spectacular thing to see. One in Argentina border, the migration process and custom again...but don’t worry, its one of the pass less busy of Argentina and normally nobody waiting there. Then we have at least 5 hours driving to get Salta city, stopping only in San Antonio de Los Cobres to have a coffee and contine over Quebrada del Toro (Train to The Clouds way) to get Salta. Estimate time to arrive: 8:00 PM (hope so)
