Itinerary
Day 01. Ancient to Present Day Wildlife & Scenery - City pick-up 06:45 - Your adventure takes you north into the wine regions of the Clare Valley. On your way, you will travel through old towns with quaint cottages and historic buildings. At Clare, you have an opportunity to visit one of the boutique wineries in this region. The legendary lilac haze of the Flinders Ranges looms ever closer and you are now in the habitat of Australia’s famous wildlife – not only kangaroos and emus live here in abundance, but also many species of birds and reptiles. From here, you continue into the heart of the Flinders Ranges through vast sheep station country. There will be an opportunity for a poignant stop at one of the ghost towns for some stories and photos. Wilpena Pound Resort is your destination tonight, providing access to glorious walking trails and excellent accommodation. Optional scenic flights are available (own cost). O/n – Wilpena Pound Resort or optional Rawnsley Park Luxury Eco Villas
Day 02. Today we take your through Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges, over hills and ridges, along riverbeds and through gullies. This region was once an ancient seabed and it now carries some of the most important early fossils known. Here you will find 600 million-year-old-fossils, a time span that defies understanding. The Flinders Ranges are home to a vast number of native animals and birds, which abound amongst the gum trees and on the steep, ragged slopes of the gorges. The vibrant colours of the rock faces, change through the day with the passage of the sun. Enjoy lunch at the Prairie Hotel. This historic Outback pub situated along the original Old Ghan Railway Line has an international reputation for its cuisine, in particular, its feral food menu including kangaroo and emu (other meals available). After lunch you will proceed up the Parachilna Gorge to the highest town in South Australia, Blinman. Blinman is an historic copper mining settlement with a population of approximately 15. Dusk and dawn is unforgettably spectacular. Bring your camera for this one. O/n – Wilpena Pound Resort or optional Rawnsley Park Luxury Eco Villas
Day 03. After your second night at Wilpena Pound, the morning journey takes you through the Moralana Scenic Drive boasting more magnificent views as you travel between the southern face of Wilpena Pound and the northern face of the Elder Range. After lunch you make your way from Quorn, the home of the famous Pichi Richi Steam Railway, through the Pichi Richi Pass and Devils Peak to the windswept high country with views over the Spencer Gulf. See some of the historic seaside townships after leaving the Pass and making your way along the coast. The narrow corridor between the Gulf and mountains gives way to the rich farming land that takes you back to Adelaide.
