If you’re at a loose end and are looking for some inspiration on what to do, then take a look through our family friendly fun events and festivals which are all coming soon!

Oyster Bake – San Antonio, USA, North America
If oysters are your thing, then head to the annual Oyster Bake, which is on this month in San Antonio, USA. More than 90,000 oysters are swallowed every year during the event, which also features six performance stages with rock bands, dance, jazz and children’s entertainment. The event has been going since 1916 and there are also fireworks and fairground rides. Don’t worry if oysters aren’t your thing – it’s not obligatory to eat your share of the 90,000!

World Grits Festival – St George, USA, North America
Staying in the USA, this time for the annual World Grits Festival held in St George, USA, Grits are nothing to do with roads or tarmac but are (for all those non-Americans!) mashed corn kernels and 45,000 people are expected in South Carolina to enjoy the Southern delicacy. Why not try the grits-eating contest, corn tossing and corn shelling competitions and don’t miss the annual crowning of “Miss Grits”. The festival has been held since 1986 and celebrates the fact that the town eats more grits per capita than anywhere else. The festival is family friendly and even vegetarian friendly so you have no excuse not to participate!

Vancouver Sun Run – Vancouver, Canada, North America
Work off all the oysters and grits at the annual Sun Run taking place this month in Vancouver in Canada. Lace up your running shoes for a 10km run through Vancouver which starts in the downtown area and finishes at the BC Place Stadium in Yaletown. You will pass through parks, beaches and bridges on the way along with 50,000 other runners. Don’t leave the kids behind as they can join in the 2.5km kids mini-run.

Edinburgh International Science Festival – Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, Western Europe
Get your kids interested in science (and brush up your knowledge) at the annual Edinburgh International Science Festival where 175,000 visitors participate in the hands-on activities, workshops and shows. There are demonstrations, exhibitions, talks and tours, all aimed at the whole family, and offer more than 200 events across 20 venues in Edinburgh. Venues include art galleries and forensic laboratories with dinosaur digs and journeys into a giant nose for all the family!

Birth of Rome – Rome, Italy, Southern Europe
Each year in Rome in Italy, proud Romans celebrate the birth of the Eternal City, which was founded by Romulus in 753BC. Watch or indeed join in the parades, gladiator shows, traditional Roman banquets and public speeches that are held all over Rome. Family friendly fun and the togas are optional!

Torino Comics & Games – Lingotto Fiere, Turin, Italy, Southern Europe
Comics and games appeal to all ages so don’t try to resist the annual Torino Comics & Games fair held in Turin in Italy this month. This event is pretty full on with exhibitions and meeting with the actual authors as well as competitions. There is also a dedicated Star Wars Fest and a Japanese Quarter at the event.

Holiday on Ice – Montpellier, France, Western Europe
The annual Holiday on Ice extravaganza unleashes its new show, Energia in Montpellier in France. The whole family will love the amazing pyrotechnics and daring acrobatics. Wonder at the incredible choreography on ice, which is all set to rousing music.
