The prestigious title of European Youth Capital is given to one city for 12 months to showcase its culture, social and development in a youth-focussed context. Held since 2009 the year-long events and festivals really showcase youth culture in a positive way focussing on specific issues.

European Youth Capital Cities 2009 – 2015

2009 – Rotterdam, Netherlands – The Dutch city of Rotterdam is currently bidding to host the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics and was the very city to host the European Youth Capital honour in 2009. Rotterdam was also the European Capital of Culture in 2001 and has a lively multicultural atmosphere. The second largest port city in the world offers some top cultural highlights. Browse the Rembrandts and Warhols at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen; admire the architectural wonder of the Erasmus Bridge and ascent the 238 foot Euromast Tower for spectacular panoramic views over the Netherlands.

2010 – Turin, Italy – Sophisticated Turin is known as Torino in Italian. As the fourth largest city in Italy and the capital of the Piedmont region, there is a wealth of culture to amply highly why Turin was chosen as a European Youth Capital. In 2010 special youth led events were held at the mighty Juventus Stadium and the central square at Piazza San Carlo. Other things to do in Turin include exploring the city’s Royal Palaces (of which there are many), catching a glimpse the famous Shroud of Turin and visiting the exquisite Basilica di Superga.

2011 – Antwerp, Belgium – The second city in Belgium hosted the European Capital of Culture in 1993. Considered a trendy hotspot, Antwerp boasts a stunning cathedral, ancient cobbled lanes and plenty of traditional shops and restaurants. Many travellers will arrive at the impressive neo-Baroque Central Station. Cultural highlights include the Baroque Carolus Borromeus Church which was built in the 1600’s by the Jesuits and the imposing Cathedral of Our Lady, which spans 2.5 acres and rises to 403 feet.

2012 – Braga, Portugal – In northern Portugal, the city of Braga is considered one of the oldest Christian settlements in the world. And to celebrate hosting the European Youth Capital in 2012, the city put on an impressive range of events and programs. Portuguese cultural highlights include the 18th century Church of the Good Jesus, the wealth of Baroque churches and the 18th century aristocrat’s palace which now serves as the Municipal Museum.

2013 – Maribor, Slovenia – Fresh from hosting the European Capital of Culture in 2012, Maribor is also hosting the European Youth Capital this year. The second largest city in Slovenia in Southern Europe is holding a year of creativity, integration and volunteering. Highlights this year include the Students goulash-feast, Social Erasmus Project and the M.bike program. Cultural highlights of Maribor include the Franciscan Church, the Three Ponds City Park and the ancient ruins of the Water Tower.

2014 – Thessaloniki, Greece – in 2014 the second largest city in Greece, known as Thessalonica and Salonica, will host the prestigious youth title. The cultural capital in northern Greece offers a very hip and happening atmosphere with plenty going on. There’s boutique shopping, lively nightlife and a plethora of festivals and events taking place. Cultural highlights include the gigantic 5th century Church of Agios Dimitrios, the modern Museum of Byzantine Culture with over 3,000 artefacts and the central Aristotelous Square. Thessaloniki also hosted the European Capital of Culture in 1997.

2015 – Cluj-Napoca, Romania – The second largest city in Romania is known simply as Cluj and will play host as the Youth Capital in 2015. Cluj-Napoca, rather aptly, has a vibrant and youthful outlook thanks to the abundance of students studying here. There’s plenty going on as well with football, opera and the café-culture popular pastimes. Visitors come to explore the 10,000 plants species at the Botanical Garden, catch a performance at the National Theatre and kayak and hike around the beautiful Fantanele Lake.

Each of these cities are recognised as World Design Capitals thanks to their unrivalled dedicated and accomplishments in the design field.

Torino: World Design Capital 2008 - The Underdog

As one of the past labelled capitals of design, Torino, aka Turin, really proved itself as the underdog in the competition, pushing past the larger cities (especially the megaliths in Italy alone) to show that Torino is a global power in design. Shining with famous works such as the Fiat, the most noted piece of Torino design work; Torino has always worked strongly in engineering and design. Automobile design has always been a staple in Torino with companies such as Lancia, Invicta and Fiat based here. Turin has shown itself in the many style centers, prototype and modelling laboratories, and research centers as well as in related areas such as robotics, nanotechnology, mechanics, metrology, cinematography, ICT, virtual reality, avionics and aeronautics, computer science, broad casting, and many more areas as well. Torino strives toward internationalization which was proven by the hosting of the 2008 Olympic Winter Games. Torino is also known for superb architecture, design schooling institutions, and support from both ICSID and ICOGRADA. Designers Carlo Mollino, Raffaele Palma, Nina Ricci are all from Turin.

Seoul: World Design Capital 2010 – Victory through Energy

Seoul in South Korea is a city that bridges eastern and western cultures and earnt the WDC title thanks to the raft of outstanding modern architecture recently built in the city. Building such as the Korea Finance Building, World Trade Center and the N Seoul Tower helped to earn the accolade. There is also the Tower Palace which is comprised of 7 skyscrapers, the Gangnam Finance Center and the Jongno Tower which all add modern influence to the skyline. The future build projects of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and the wave-shaped City Hall will further cement Seoul’s position on the global design map. Notable Korean products tend toward the high tech and have infused themselves into the rest of the world’s cultures. It is products and lines such as Samsung, Hyundai, LG Electronics, Inc., Daewoo, Kia, and Helio that have made Korea a bright point on the map of world design and industry. Local fashion designers sell their pieces in boutiques in Samcheong-dong. During Seoul’s hosting of the World Design Capitals program; there was in intense focus on promoting and trying to gain exposure and education to all of South Korea’s design areas that specifically aim to advance the culture, the economy, and the overall culture.

Helsinki: World Design Capital 2012 – Embedded Design/ World Design

The capital of Finland, Helsinki, is in a prime location to deliver good design internationally. Being placed smack dab in the middle of the Baltic Sea region, it is easily able to promote itself east and west. Finland boasts a strong economy, a safe living environment, a stable infrastructure, as well as extremely high standards of wealth and over all living. Much of the city centre’s Neoclassical architecture can be attributed to one man; Carl Ludvig Engel, who designed many of the buildings within Senate Square. Jugend (Art Nouveau) architecture is more prevalent in Helsinki, particularly in the Katajanokka and Ullanlinna districts. Eliel Saarinen led the Finnish art nouveau movement and created such masterpieces as the Helsinki central railway station. Companies such as Nokia, Kone and Marimekko are based in Helsinki. Though Helsinki is small, the natural nature of Finland does not go amiss in this capital town. With a quarter of Finland’s population, Helsinki is forced to network its areas together, intertwining and depending on one another and design makes this all happen. Noted designers and schools include the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Eliel Saarinen and Alvar Aalto.

Cape Town: World Design Capital 2014 – Future Capital of Design

Although it’s situated at the very bottom of Africa, Cape Town is certainly not at the bottom when it comes to the world of design. Many large companies, from fashion designers, publishers, design houses and advertising agencies call Cape Town home. As a large city, Cape Town still manages to hold on to its heritage, creative spirit, diversity, and talent pool all within a high living standard. And this UNESCO recognised region boasts heritage architecture from the Castle of Good Hope, the Cape Dutch influence and the iconic Cape Town Stadium which hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Cape Town’s supreme design capabilities allow it to grow and become more and more engaged in the world without sacrificing a good standard of life aiming to make the WDC more broad and focused on sustainability, urban development, and showing different ways to grow socially and economically worldwide. Watch the video below and see for yourself why Cape Town will be huge in 2014;

There are currently two active erupting volcanoes causing disruption on flights from North America to Asia and within southern Europe.

Mount Cleveland in Alaska erupted three times last Saturday with ash sent 15,000 feet into the air. There were 3 explosions within seven hours from the Cleveland volcano which is in a remote region within the Aleutian Islands. Situated 940 miles to the southwest of Anchorage, Cleveland has all the indications of presenting a ‘sustained eruption’. Cleveland is just one of 90 active volcanoes in the area, known as ‘The Ring of Fire’. The region is a major air traffic route connecting the USA and Asia. Cleveland weighs in at 5,676 feet (1,730 meters) high and has erupted more than 20 times during the last 2 years. Although there are no cancelled flights as yet, keep an eye on the situation as an increase in ash over the airspace could cause flight disruption. This could become a contender for our top explosive volcano destinations list!

And over in Southern Europe, Mount Etna in Sicily has also had sporadic signs of activity, with 13 eruptions so far this year. On occasion, air traffic is affected and planes have been re-routed. Etna stands in at 10,922 feet (3,329 meters) and is part of the Nebrodi mountain range.

Do you remember the mighty volcanic ash cloud from Eyjafjallajokull Volcano that saw 100,000 flights grounded over six days and left more than 10 million travellers stranded in spring 2010? Eruptions are measured on an explosivity index (VEI) from 0 to 7, and Eyjafjallajökull measured 4 on the scale. Thankfully Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland, which stands at 5,466 feet (1,666 meters) tall, has not erupted since April 2010, fingers crossed!

The Puyehue-Cordón Caulle Volcano in Chile last erupted in June 2011, measuring 4 on the VEI. Ash rose some 39,370 feet (12,000 meters) in the air and caused major disruptions to flights over the southern hemisphere. Travel within South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand was all affected. Currently there are no issues.

If you get lost easily, then these largest buildings in the world are not recommended. If however you appreciate modern design and engineering feats, you’ll be in your element.

1. Abraj Al Bait Towers, Saudi Arabia – Opened in 2012, the Abraj Al Bait Towers (pictured above), aka Mecca Royal Hotel Clock Tower, is located in Mecca in Saudi Arabia. The building was constructed on the site of an 18th century Ottoman citadel and the new structure has 2 helipads, a 20 storey shopping mall and enough room to comfortably house 100,000 people! And with 1.5m square meters (16.1m sq. feet) of floor space, this is the largest building in the world! As you’d expect from the city that brought us the Masjid al Haram (the largest mosque in the world), the Abraj Al Bait Towers also smashes several other records including; ‘tallest clock tower in the world’ and second tallest building in the world (after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai).

2. Dubai International Airport Terminal 3, Dubai, UAE – Home to the Burj Khalifa (tallest building in the world), Dubai also boasts the largest building by floor space; terminal 3 of the international airport. Opened in October 2008, terminal 3 cost a reported 4.5 billion USD and was exclusively for the use of Emirates airliners. In total the largest airport terminal in the world covers 1.5m square meters (16.1m sq. feet).

3. CentralWorld, Bangkok, Thailand – The phrase ‘shop ‘til you drop’ could have been invented for CentralWorld, but this is only the third largest mall in the world (after 2 in China). Located on the Ratchadamri Road in central Bangkok, CentralWorld is a combination of shopping plaza and business offices, covering 1m sq. meters (11m sq. feet). Opened in 1990, the center has been added to over the years and the mall element features many well-known Western and Asian stores.

4. Aalsmeer Flower Auction, the Netherlands – Boasting unrivalled flower power is the huge Aalsmeer Flower Auction, which covers 990,000 sq. meters (10.6m sq. feet) of floor space. Aalsmeer is located in North Holland and 20 million flowers are traded here every day from all over the world.

5. Beijing Capital International Airport Terminal 3, Beijing, China – Just getting pipped to the post for the world’s largest airport terminal is Beijing International Airport. Covering 986,000 sq. m (10.6m sq. feet) the terminal was built to handle the extra tourism that the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games generated. The Chinese airport also added a third runway and a rail link into central Beijing.

6. The Venetian, Macau, China – If whiling away a few hours at a world-class casino is your thing, then you’ll be in your element at Macau’s Venetian Hotel and Casino. Macau is an island that is a former Portuguese colony (just a few miles from Hong Kong) and has established itself as the biggest gambling destination in the world – surpassing even Las Vegas! In fact, based on revenue, Macau handled three times more than Las Vegas last year. The Venetian itself is absolutely huge and well worth a visit just to gawp at the 40 storey structure. Covering 980,000 sq. m (10.5m sq. feet) The Venetian Macao is the largest casino in the world and was modelled on the Las Vegas Venetian. Opened in 2007, there are 3,000 suites and 3,400 slot machines and a 15,000 capacity events arena.

7. Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – The 48 storey, twin towered Berjaya Times Square rises to 203 m (666 ft) and is also the seventh largest building in the world, covering some 700,000 sq. m (7.5, sq. feet). Made up of a shopping center, office space and leisure facilities, Berjaya Times Square has over 1,000 stores, 1,200 services suites and 65 food stores in addition to a cinema and themepark.

All animals are temperamental but some are downright lethal – just this week a tourist was mauled to death by a hippo in Kenya. And a few weeks ago a student was left paralysed after stepping on a deadly sea urchin in Skiathos in Greece.

Poison Dart Frog

There are more than 175 different species of the poison dart frog – each more colourful and more poisonous than the last. In fact these tiny critters pack a really powerful punch! Adults weigh in at just 2 grams and measure 1.5 cm (0.59 in) long. This ultra-poisonous amphibian lives in Central and South America and has enough venom to kill ten adult men!

American Crocodile

The American crocodile is on the ‘vulnerable’ list as far as conservation goes, but this beast is the largest species of crocodile in the world. Found in south and central America, parts of the Caribbean and southern Florida, this croc can grow up to 20 feet (6.1 m) long and weigh a mighty 907 kg (2,000 lb). And unlike most other crocodiles, this beast thrives in saltwater. Thankfully American Crocodiles rarely attack large mammals and humans but I wouldn’t take the chance – unlike the guy in the video above – watch them get close and hear the screams!

Orca

The name ‘orca’ sounds so much more gentle than its other moniker – the killer whale. With graceful moves and stunning markings, orcas live in every ocean on earth, from the tropical to the arctic. On earth for around 11 million year, the orca is the fastest sea mammal and can weigh up to 6 tonnes, which is as much as 2 elephants. And at up to 8 metres (26 ft) long, this is one beast not to mess with. Although they rarely attack humans in the wild, captured orcas have featured in US themeparks since the 1960s and this has resulted in several deaths.

King Cobra

The mighty King Cobra is the largest and deadliest venomous snake in the world – in fact it can administer a bite so deadly as to kill an elephant. Found throughout Southeast Asia and India, this cobra can measure up to 18.8 ft (5.7 m) long. Noticeable for its beautifully intricate markings, this snake is on the conservation watch list, as it considered at vulnerable status. And although if feasts mostly on other snakes, it’ll think nothing of nipping a human that gets in its way.

Wolf

The wolf has long been despised yet it will rarely attack a human. Roaming the earth for hundreds of thousands of years, today the wolf is commonplace in North America, North Africa and across Eurasia. Wolfs are voracious creatures and can consume 20 pounds (9km) of meat in one meal. Wolfs will attack farm livestock and other mammals and its only threat is the human and the tiger.

Vampire Bat

This species of bat feeds exclusively on fresh blood – hence the name! There are 3 bats within the species; common, hairy-legged and white-winged. They are native to the Americas, mostly South America and all hunt at night. The common vampire bat feasts on warm-blooded mammals and, if can find one, sleeping humans blood! The other 2 species only feed on birds’ blood. These are resourceful creatures with razor sharp teeth that can gouge fur and pierce the skin. A common vampire bat can consume up to half its own weight in blood in one sitting!

Mosquito

Often considered the most dangerous animal on earth, the mosquito is responsible for more than two million people a year. At best a few mossie bites results in nasty itchy bites for several days and at worst it can develop into malaria or yellow fever. Found across the world, mosquitos thrive on stagnant water and will readily attack both humans and animals. Interestingly only the females suck blood!

To date, five world cities have the prestigious honour of being named the UNESCO City of Music. Praised for their musical creativity and activity within music festivals and events, these cities are a must for all music enthusiasts.

Bologna in Italy – 2006

Since the inception of the first scholarly course on music in the 1450 at Law University, Bologna has enjoyed a history steeped in classical music. The city houses renowned institutions such as the Accademia Filarmonica and Mozart Orchestra and regional folk choir Coro Stelutis in addition to multiple festivals and music venues.

The Italian Bologna Festival is one of the top classical music festivals held in Europe. The 2 Agosto, the International Composition Competition is also held in Bologna. Travellers can explore the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, which is a prestigious opera house. The Cantina Bentivoglio sections off a portion of the street and collaborates with 3 neighboring restaurants to provide live outdoor jazz throughout July.

Ghent in Belgium – 2009

Still gaining in popularity as a top destination for food, beer and music, the city of Ghent has emerged as one of the premier cultural destinations in Europe. Yet it is still largely often overlooked by travellers.

Part of the eclectic music offerings of the Ghent Festival, the largest city festival in Europe, 10 Days Off is a clubber’s dream showcasing the entirety of the electronic genre. Ghent holds the only festival dedicated to music in film, hosting the World Soundtrack Awards during the International Film Festival of Flanders-Ghent. The ‘Hotsy Totsy’ is a very popular local artist and jazz café. Over 100 concerts from classical to jazz are held at the Bijloke Music Centre.

Glasgow in Scotland, UK – 2008

While Glasgow may be the host of the World Pipe Band Championships and the Piping Live! Festival, it offers more than just the traditional bagpipes. It is also the launching pad for mainstream musical acts such as rock band Franz Ferdinand and the indie pop groups Glasvegas and Belle and Sebastian.

The Celtic Connections Festival brings traditional Scottish music and culture to the present. Considered to be one of the best small venues in Europe, the Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom books popular rock and pop artists. King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut is a popular live venue where Oasis was discovered and signed. And the Royal Scottish National Orchestra can be heard at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

Seville in Spain – 2006

Keeper of the Andalucian culture and the first designated city of music, Seville is best known for flamenco dancing and music. Also famous for being the setting of Bizet’s Carmen and Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, music is engrained in the culture of Seville.

Spanish traditions are explored at the Old Music Festival and Seville: A Festival of Spanish Music. Indie acts travel to Seville biennially to play at the South Pop Festival. Decorated in ode to a surrealist film, El Perro Andaluz is a bar booking a catch all of musical genres. Casa de la Memoria de al-Andalus provides authentic flamenco music and dancing.

Bogota in Colombia 2012

While the country itself has been in a volatile state, the city of Bogota has been using music to improve the lives of Colombians. Bogota has successfully merged the old and the new as well as its many ethnicities.

Rock al Parque is one of the largest and most popular rock music festivals in Latin America boasting international acts. Music at the busy Gaira Café is updated traditional where the likes of Carlos Vives can be seen. El Coq is an open-air bar hosting indie and electro artists. The best Colombian bands play at the live music venue Palco 93.
