Faro: The Overlooked City

The Portuguese resort of Faro is one of the busiest places in the Algarve. The city is home to the main airport in the region and many tourists simply pass through the stunning city as they whiz along the coast to other resorts on the Algarve. Faro itself is home to several stunning attractions and people catching flights to Faro miss out on the multitude of attractions the city has to offer.

There are several places of historical interest in the region including the Carmo Church in Largo do Carmel, which is home to the ghoulish Chapel of Bones. The city also houses the Archaeological Museum, housed in a 16th-century convent, which attracts people from around the country. Similarly, the city is also home to two universities, which bring with them an excellent nightlife.

The two main party streets, Rua Conselheiro Bivar and Rua Infante Dom Henrique, and the narrow alleys which run off from them, provide perfect places to party the night away. Bars including: Galeria Bar Patrimonio on Rua do Prior, Bar dos Arcos on Travessa dos Arcos and Cruzeiro on Largo da Madalena are fun filled and busy.

There is also a main shopping area which is located in the heart of town along the Rua Santo Antonio and the Rua Francisco Gomes. This is a great place to bag a bargain and while away the day wandering the city’s historic streets.

Like many of the resorts in the region Faro has stunning beaches, which are framed by perfect coves and are soaked in sun during the summer months. So anyone looking for an Algarve holiday, with plenty of history to explore should have a look at holidays in Faro. The Portuguese resort is the perfect place to explore, party, learn and bask in the sun. The people who simply whiz past on their way to more established holiday resorts are certainly missing out on something special.
