While some people dream of spending time lazing along the sandy beaches of the tropics, some love rolling down the freezing snow high in the mountains. France is always the destination of choice for skiers due to is sizeable collection of ski resorts and accessibility of these resorts from airports. Here are some of the best ski places in France.

COURCHEVEL

Courchevel is the glamorous sister of the three valleys where celebrities flock and arrive in style in private jets and planes. It is notoriously expensive as it is the rich and wealthy playground. It has the most varied skiing among the Three Valleys with superb off piste, offers magnificent tree lined runs, a great range of terrain for all levels of skiers and a state of the art lift system with access to all the Three Valleys. It faces the North which means excellent snow conditions long into spring.

MERIBEL

Meribel is located at the heart of Trois Vallees and boasts of one of the world’s most impressive lift linked network of pistes and skiable terrain. Its 600km of piste system and 200 lifts is unrivalled and it sits comfortably and conveniently at the heart Three Valleys. The pistes and runs are well marked though not entirely clear on the piste maps; it is possible to navigate all the valleys entirely on green runs. The Chalet system of Meribel is also impressive and meticulously preserved giving a fine example of purpose built resort, where picking form the array of amazing catered ski chalets will be your only problem.

VAL D'ISERE

Val d’Isere is located right at the end of Frances Haute Tarentaise valley which is very close to the Italian border; together with its twin resort Tignes they form the celebrated Espace Killy ski region. It has more than 1000 hectares of varied ski runs and a remarkable 10 000 hectares of off piste runs easily accessible via the incredible lift system. This area is superb for advanced and intermediary skiers and offers an exhilarating ski experience which also comes at a price; well it is the finest ski resort.

CHAMONIX

Chamonix is impressive and at the very first glance it is breathtaking. It is the European capital of extreme skiing on the highest mountain of the European Alps. The deep mountain valleys of Mont Blanc offer extensive slopes suitable for advanced skiers. There is a thriving town right in the middle and quaint mountain villages clinging tightly on the sides of the mountains which appear dwarfed by the size of the mountain and the view gets even better the higher you go. Though there is a bit of something for everyone here, adventurous skiers may enjoy this place best.

SAMOENS

Samoens is a stunning resort at the heart of the Grand Massif in the Giffre Valley and surrounded by seven dramatically beautiful mountain peaks, it probably should be known better. It is an ideal location for a family holiday due to plentiful activities on and off slopes. It has one of the best snow records on the Alps and with fast lifts and lesser queues.
