3 Great Places To Go On Safari In Botswana

THE OKAVANGO DELTA

Known as the ‘Jewel of the Kalahari’, this is one of those attractions that truly lives beyond its hype. It is only until you visit that you will understand why it is named so, and you will recognize that it is one of the best places to go on a luxury safari in Africa. It is an oasis of tranquility set amidst the harsh and arid desert at the Kalahari Desert. Its variety of flora and fauna makes it one of the best destinations for the perfect safari in Africa.

The Okavango River is the longest in South Africa and as it meanders through the desert sands it leaves indelible marks of scenic beauty. It drains its massive waters in the Kalahari Desert forming the largest inland delta in the world. The delta is part of the Moremi Wildlife reserve which is home to several species of animals. If you are a bird watcher, this will mean heaven to you as there are over 500 species of birds including rare ones such as locust finch, black cheeked lovebirds, white-backed vultures and chestnut-banded plover. Other animals in this region include lions, leopards, elephants, black rhino and the African wild dogs. This is definitely the place to be in touch with nature.

CHOBE NATIONAL PARK

If you like seeing huge herds of elephants grazing along the banks of a fresh river then this is the place to be. It is home to Africa’s largest elephant population and the Chobe National Park delivers some of Africa’s best heavyweight safaris. A safari in Chobe National Park is not only rewarding, it also lets you enjoy spectacular wildlife at close range in dramatic and unspoilt environments. Hold you cameras ready to catch crimes of nature as you relish the fiercest claws and sharpest teeth of Africa tearing down their hard won catch in the hunting game. Chobe is where lions take on herds of buffalos and clash with packs of laughing hyenas. It sets a magnificent background of the spectacular zebra migration, where wild dogs enjoy hunting as the numerous birds find themselves as the sole spectators of the wild battle zone.

You can go on intimate game drives or river cruises to witness the density and variety of Chobe National Park which is unrivalled. Alternatively, if you want to reside in the jungle you can choose to stay in luxurious lodges in the park for an exceptional wild experience.

THE KALAHARI DESERT

After venturing into the wet areas it is now time to head to the lesser visited areas of Botswana which is the Kalahari Desert. There are three parks located on the extensive desert sands of the Kalahari. Surprisingly, you will find animals such as giraffes, gemsbok, antelopes, leopards, lions and even smaller animals such as porcupines and wild cats.

The Nxai Pan National Park is easily accessible and offers an extraordinary mix of desert and savannah animals on the sole dry-season waterhole. The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the largest conservation area and a predator paradise due to the density of water holes, while the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park offers suitable grassland for grazing and birdlife.
